2021 Decor Trends: Designer Predictions

Few of us predicted a year ago that coming into 2021, we’d still be so profoundly dealing with a global pandemic. But with the majority of the workforce working from home for most of 2020, we can now predict that decor trends for the new year are still greatly influenced by this massive shift in our daily lives. What was once thought of as temporary has become our actuality. As Martyn Lawrence Bullard put it, “Comfort, practicality, and making your home your sanctuary on every level,” will rule the day. Here are the decor trends that will continue to feel essential as we all hope to turn the corner in the coming months…

Attention to Artful Details

We’re all home a lot more so we’re all paying a lot more attention to the small stuff around us. As we continue to navigate staying in one place, we will want to infuse that space with interesting, curated pieces that make us smile. Objets d’art, vintage finds, special heirlooms, and pieces from local artisans and small businesses will be front and center.

Decorating Tip: Use our Rule of 3 to style your accessories. Learn how to here.

Multi-Functional Spaces

It’s not much of a surprise that our need to work from home would make us get creative with how we are using our spaces. And now that we understand it’s going to be much longer than we first anticipated, we’re making more permanent changes to make our living spaces workable.

Decoraing Tip: In our Healdsburg Weekend Escape project we used a small desk instead of a nightstand to squeeze in a solution that works both ways. More WFH tips here.

Happy, Peaceful Colors

We’re all looking for comfort where we can find it, and creating a calming environment around us is no exception. Rather than dark-and-moody or bold-and-bright palettes, we’re opting for happy, peaceful colors that tend to be in the greens, blues, and soft warm yellow hues as they evoke much-needed nature and wellness.

Wallpaper Pattern Play

Looking at the same walls day in and out has got us looking for solutions to upgrade our current surroundings. Wallpapers — especially easy peel-and-stick in fun and interesting patterns — will be our salvation.

Art for Backdrops

We’re all on Zoom calls and can clearly see we need to majorly upgrade our backdrops. We’ve grown tired of the bookshelf backdrop and are looking to add some color and personality through our art decor. Colorful and/or unique pieces have up’d the new Zoom standard.

Check out a few our fave painters , photographers, and 3D artists right now.

Table Lamps

HOT: the soft glow of a good table lamp.

NOT: the harsh shadows of overhead lighting.

Endless Zoom video calls have also taught us the invaluable importance of flattering lighting. Enter the table lamp. Filtered light through a lampshade as well as face-level lighting gives us that movie star glow. And with so many options out there to play with, our table lamp game is getting strong.

Decorating Tip: add a beaded necklace or tassel to dress up any table lamp for that added extra touch.

Comfy Casual

“While the mid-century look was very popular, now that people are actually hanging out in their living spaces for hours at a time, there is a strong trend towards furniture that is big on soft, comfy sofas and chairs that allow you to lounge with ease,” Timothy Corrigan tells Vogue. Less need for the pomp and circumstance, more need for the comfy and casual with durability top of mind.
