Pillows: Most of us can’t get enough of buying them and yet when you get them home, you don’t quite know what to do with all of them! So it comes as no surprise that we get asked about pillow combinations A LOT! As it turns out, we are working on our very own pillow capsule collection this year, but in the meantime, we will show you a few easy styling tips and tricks for sofas.

First, let’s start with the SOFA itself: Toss those ‘extra’ pillows that come with it (pro tip: we save them and often use them in other rooms). No one wants it too matchy-matchy anyway, so we layer decorative pillows instead. Three of our no-fail pillow formulas below…

THE 5-PILLOW FORMULA

Probably the most popular pillow formula! The trick is to layer pattern, texture, and colors. We recommend a 22” square layered with a 20” square on each side. Add in a kidney pillow on one side. Not each side does has to match! Mix it up.

SHOP THE LOOK

the 3-pillow formula

If you prefer less pillows and more surface sofa area, the 3-pillow formula works just as well. We prefer three completely different pillows in size and pattern, keeping the color palette somewhat unified. Side chairs: we have found that 20” square pillows work well for back support.

THE SECTIONAL PILLOW FORMULA

Now sectionals always seem to cause confusion when it comes to pillows — how many? Where to put them? How to make it not look too messy? Our suggestion would be to keep the color palette consistent across all pillows. And try this formula: two on one side, two in the middle, and one on the other side.
